  • Bounded on four sides by Jarvis, Gerrard East, Sherbourne and Carlton streets, the botanical garden, located in the Allen Garden park at the edge of downtown, is an easy find but not many people know about it. The Allen Gardens park around the conservatory has a play area for children and off-leash dog park as well. This place is a great stumble upon while you are exploring the city's Gay village, Cabbagetown, Regent park or Garden district all of which are located in the surrounding neighbourhoods; when I take visitors on a tour of the city, we often end here. In the middle of a snowy chilly winter, the conservatory provides a welcome break. Leave your jackets behind and strip down to your t-shirt because this place is warm and humid. During summer I sometimes come here for lunch in the leafy park. I think the foundation that runs this place is doing a great job of keeping it going and best of all, it's free to visit! The botanical gardens has four (or five?) major sections - the tropical house, cool house, palm house and cactus house. There is also an area for training or facilities maintenance. Who knew there could be public space, in downtown Toronto, that is well kept and maintains rare tropical plants from all around the world in a little 16,000 sqft area. Check it out! http://finaltransit.com/blog/2010/10/26/toronto-tuesday-02-13-allan-gardens/
