  • The Clarendon touts itself as "A four star boutique hotel in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona." I'm going to call BS on that statement right now because I'm not sure who exactly is giving this hotel 4 stars but from my experience this weekend it can't be anyone who has ever stayed there. My boyfriend and I wanted to spend some time by the pool this weekend since it was so nice out, and I suggested the Clarendon because I had enjoyed their pool before. We decided to make a weekend out of it so we booked a room. All of this spontaneity did not result in a good time. We arrived on Saturday at 3:20ish, and I was really excited to lay out for a bit. However, check in took forever. I'm not even sure why because it seemed like we simply went through their standard process of signing our lives away and placing a card on hold for "incidentals." It was well after 4 before we even got to the pool and then we had to wait at the front desk again for towels which was super annoying. I ended up just taking a towel that I found because I really didn't want to spend any more time in the lobby. When we finally got out to the pool, I began noticing that the hotel is definitely a run down establishment. All of the pool furniture is falling apart and stained (like really gross stains too), and the pool itself is missing tiles and has dirty plaster. But whatever, I just wanted to hang out so I covered my chair in the towels that it took my boyfriend 15 minutes to get from the front desk, and I tried to go on my merry way. That was the point that I started noticing something else about The Clarendon; there are employees everywhere and they are watching you. For example, while my boyfriend and I were by the pool, I noticed some guy employee pointing at us to one of the front desk girls. She then came down to where we were sitting so I made my boyfriend go back up to the room with me right away. It was weird and I really didn't like it. Later that night we also saw this random security guard on the roof harassing this older lady. She was hanging out up there with some drinks, and it didn't really make sense. We also had to wait another 20 minutes at the front desk to get ice. We were told "the owner doesn't believe in ice machines." Hmmm so let's inconvenience our guests and make them wait even longer to get a basic hotel amenity. It is now 9:21am on Sunday morning and I am typing this review on my phone while I listen to housekeeping bang around the hallways right outside of our room. To say that I'm a little frustrated is an understatement. I will certainly not be back to this hotel, and I also have no idea who would give this place four stars. Obviously, not very many Yelpers since they barely have an average rating on Yelp.
