| - I was between 3 and 4 stars for a review, but I decided to go back and try again in the hopes that I can bump it up. First, the food was excellent. We started with the hushpuppies and cornbread, and both were surprisingly light on the grease-factor and worth the price in terms of size and quality (6 large hushpuppies, and 4 good-sized squares of cornbread). We had the lobster roll and fries and the seafood gumbo. For me, the lobster roll was too garlic-buttery, but that's kind of how it's supposed to be. It's one of the few in the city that goes the butter vs. mayo route, so if that's your thing, it's a substantial portion of seafood for the price (albeit the lobster is cut with crawfish). The seafood gumbo was delicious. A little heat, but a ton of seafood. I had no problem at all paying $24 for something that hearty and generous.
We also had the cocktails, one sazerac and one Mardi Gras special drink. The sazerac was ok...not common on drink menus around here, so I was happy that a creole/cajun restaurant was smart enough to at least try to include it. The other drink was a funky combination of Purple Haze, mezcal, and flavored shrubs. It was very heavy on the mezcal, which can be a pretty acquired taste, so I wish they had dealt a little more deftly with that flavor.
We had a reservation and still had to wait about 15 minutes, which would have been less irritating if they actually had somewhere to wait. It's a pretty small place, so we had to sit at the bar, which unfortunately took seats from people just looking to sit at the bar and give business to the bartender for a bit. The other complaint was that though our server was very personable, we were done with our cocktails mid-meal but he didn't offer us another cocktail until our plates had been cleared and we were finished. We were wanting to have another drink, but at that point we were done with the food and felt kind of like he was trying to quickly turn over the table, which wouldn't be surprising given the limited seating. He also didn't offer dessert, so I'm not even sure if they have a dessert menu there. Not a big deal, but if you have a dessert menu, I'm usually a pretty easy sell. Overall, great food, ok cocktails, but the experience seemed a little too rushed for us, whereas most restaurants at this price point tend to give you time to relax and enjoy it a little more.
