  • A first time stay for my wife and I, not only for the Golden Nugget but a first in downtown Vegas. I hadn't stayed downtown since the age of 13 when my family was traveling to and from Yellowstone National Park. That was back in 1968, but I remember seeing the Golden Nugget even back then, a true landmark. This was not a planned getaway, but since we learned that my wife had won the daily lottery for Hamilton this past Sunday night at the Smith Center, scheduling a room for one night nearby was crucial. And that was with only a one day notice. Remembering how pleased a friend and coworker was with her family's stay here just a few years prior, and its close proximity to Smith Center, Golden Nugget was worth a try. We arrived right after the 3 PM check-in time, something I wouldn't recommend to anyone, only to find a line of about 40-50 ahead of us. But I managed to get through in about 40 minutes while my wife had a seat with our bags. Our room was in the Carson Tower, which was not bad. Although the walk from the elevator on the 6th floor to room 6102 was like a maze and a bit confusing, but we survived. Nice room by the way, with comfortable bed and plenty of extra towels. We even took in the wild Fremont scene right outside the hotel, watching the zipliners flying overhead every few minutes. And a bit of a change from all of our past stays on the strip. I wasn't too pleased to see Claim Jumper as one of their dining options though after my most recent experience with them.
