I had a broken torsion spring which, thanks to good lawyering somewhere, I can't buy at Home Depot because I'm not smart enough to not hurt myself installing it. But that's a different story. Called on Sunday morning, got prompt attention; the friendly woman quoted $60-$90 for the spring, $65 for the service, and I said okay. The service tech was on time and did a great job, but when I pointed out that one of the two lift cables had broken when the spring failed and asked him to replace both of them, I was astonished to hear it would add $80 to the cost of the job. These cables go for less than $8 apiece at the hardware store, so getting charged 5x that cost was quite a surprise. I guess they have to make their money somewhere, but if I have to deal with this outfit again I'll be a lot more careful to get all the costs up front before they come out. I could've bought the cables up the street before he got there and saved myself $65.
