  • Allow me to sing the praises of this fine establishment's version of the venerable Brittany tasty treat - the Kouign-Amann. A version of this item is now a regular feature at hip cafes in the USA, but the version here is completely different and far superior. It is, simply put, one of the more remarkable things I have ever had. But first, some context and history: We stayed near here in 2013 and I stumbled on it, and groggily came down one Saturday morning to queue up for a couple slices. At that point in time, this item was still relatively unknown, so I literally had no idea what I had just stumbled into. I brought it back to our wee flat with two coffees, and we unwrapped and enjoyed. And by enjoyed, I mean we were like, how the h*ll has this not been in our lives until now? My gal is a major baked good fiend, and this sort of caramelized, multilayered, unique item was a direct hit. Alas, we had to leave that day, so made a note to seek it out elsewhere, blithely thinking we would be able to do so. Four largely fruitless years of searching later, we returned. We had discussed it often, and were greatly relieved to a) find the bakery still open and b) still making this marvel. We swung in on a brisk November Wednesday, late morning, and ordered up a few slices. The venue had had a facelift since my first visit, which is a promising sign of their prosperity. They has whole wheels of the K-A available, which was a remarkably decadent thing to consider, and would be an amazing way to totally blow up an office coffee hour or a hosted brunch. So, there we were, sitting down by the window, after four years of talking and thinking about this crazy thing. And there it was, on our plates, looking back at us. And, oh - it was good. Not just good, but a marvel of execution and consistency. We spent a good thirty minutes savoring every bite, and trying to figure out how on earth they can make a round item that has some many horizontal layers, that cook so evenly, but not overly so. A really tremendous piece of IP, this K-A. The simple ingredients, the flakiness, the honey tying it all together - just tremendous. Mission accomplished, memory validated, poor imitators repudiated. In sum, if you are a fan, don't miss this item. Can't speak to the rest - looks fine - but this place has this name for a reason. Glad it is doing well, as we will be back!!
