| - Did not have fun. I paid cash and was refunded my tuition. I went some time ago to refresh my dealer skills. For the most part I was just looking for a place to practice and deal out some games to live people. The guy heading up Craps was rude, cranky and lacked all social decorum. I have been through Basic Training once, don't need a do-over from a mis-guided instructor who feels more comfortable trying to intimidate than teach.
The school defended his methods as a typical dynamic one might find in gaming. This is just not true especially with today's corporate ownership. Yes, you have to have a thick skin to deal with many aspects of life but this a school for dealing mechanics not Life 101. I have worked at a dozen casinos, starting with a bird game at the Gate under Sal who was legendary for running a tight shift and the only real grief I got was from drunk or unruly customers and the occasional supervisor sweating the money.
I will say that this took place a few years ago. So my suggestion is that anyone considering going to a dealers school actually view a class and perhaps meet your potential instructors to see if they are compatible with your personal learning needs. The recruiter is going to tell you anything they think you want to hear. If I had simply watched even part of a class, I could have avoided signing up all together.
It is true that sometimes you have to pay more to get a better experience. It is also true that some companies jack up the price to max out federal student loan and VA school allowances. I get that some people need to take advantage of these resources, and right after the Army I was one of those, and still regret it.
The cash price I paid for Crescent was just under $900 for 3 games and literally $500 more than I will end up paying another school that has been around longer and in my opinion has much more engaging teachers and better job connections.
I have no idea what Crescent charges people who tap Federal Loans but I have heard its a lot especially given that they offer a 30 week program. Are you kidding me? If you need more than 2 weeks to learn any casino game, you may want to see what that actual Monkey did before he learned to deal cards. Most people think its all about math, but honestly, once you have dealt for a while, you learn its more about colors and some very basic techniques. I know people who are terrible at math and are great dealers.
Also, I have never been asked for my Certificate in Craps. If you came with a Doctorate in Dice you would still need to pass an audition to prove you can handle the action. Although Doctor of Dice would look good on my name tag.
On a more positive note the school was clean and close to where I lived at the time. Also, the support staff were very friendly and they provided my refund without a hassle. I also talked with some students and all but one were mostly positive. I ran into a guy in the parking lot who was irate over the bar tending school of which I know nothing.
