It really pains me to give CDS anything less than 5 stars because I caught "O" in Vegas and Kooza two summers ago in NYC when they pitched a tent on Governor's Island and both shows were out of this worlddd!!! I didn't mind the hefty pricetags bc Cirque Du Soleil shows are just incredible and I'd pay full price to see any of their productions. However, I could've done without Zarkana, even with my Groupon discount. And here's why:
1- the music used to be so good and mesmerizing...what happened?! I don't mind that it's in English but there was something definitely off about it
2- I could not follow the storyline whatsoever. I read up on Zarkana before I purchased tickets and thought it was interesting but it was hard to follow once you're at the show.
3- The eyeballs background/ baby funeral scene was a bit too dark even for my tastes, not to mention there were alot of families with young kids present who weren't used to a morbid atmosphere at a modern circus
4- the acts didn't wow me. or maybe I've been spoiled by more grandiose CDS shows. or maybe I set my standards too high for Zarakana. or all of the above. I've seen the tightrope men and the wheel of death before... I thought to myself "oh I've seen this. they're running outta material so they're recycling acts."
Overall, I still enjoyed the show thanks to the clowns =D The flying clown suspended in outer space who hung up a Red Sox then Yankees shirt had me laughing so hard I almost wet my pants! Oh and I also loved the sand drawing girl and the male contortionist who casted colorful shadows against the backdrop. Hell I loved all the acts! lol everyone is so talented and amazing!
