  • I used to travel between Quebec City and Montreal once every two months, and ride-and-share was a great option to save money (seriously, Orleans Express is soooo expensive). I was initially a subscriber to Allô-Stop, but they have since closed. Amigo Express is a newer ride-and-share service, and I believe it's even better than its predecessor. Once you set an account up, you can book a trip and receive information related to the meeting time and place, the name of the driver, the type of car, etc. There's an annual subscription fee of about 10$, plus 5$ for booking a trip, in addition to the price listed by the driver, payable in cash at destination. Everything is done online, unlike Allô-Stop, which used to require a visit to its office in an obscure building on St-Denis to renew subscriptions. Of course, you don't know who will be your fellow travelers, which is both part of the fun and, sometimes, the not so fun. If you want to minimize bad surprises or awkward situations, I suggest travelling with a friend (you're allowed one 'guest' per travel), and checking the driver's ratings before selecting him/her. Many measures are there to insure travellers' safety and satisfaction. Licence plate numbers are given when trips are booked, and phone numbers/emails are communicated. After each trip, Amigo Express calls customers for driver evaluations. Even then, strange and funny stories arise from time to time. I remember a very awkward night drive where both back passengers were fast asleep, and I was stuck in the front seat listening to a radio program about the reproductive behavior of raccoons. The driver was totally silent the whole time. Nevertheless, Amigo Express is a great and essential alternative to Orleans Express, both for riders and drivers. Not sure how I'd improve it! Tip: If you're not talkative, try to arrive early and snatch a back seat. The unspoken rule is that the front seater is also the driver's chit chat partner.
