| - The Free House has a nice outdoor patio area in the summer, and the best seats indoors are the bar stools by the window. The rest is dark and dated, but the food often makes up for it. Today I had the walleye po'boy; the fish was grilled to perfection, not too spicy, and served with hot, freshly made fries. Another favorite is the avocado salad, with garbanzo beans, cherry tomatoes and kalamata olives, with drizzled balsamic vinegar; add grilled chicken, because it's delicious. Today's salad was served with a piece of bread that was day-old at best; two days old is more likely--the kind even a squirel or pigeon would not eat, and the kind no one with a hint of self respect should ever serve to humans. If you're a drinker, there's a vast selection of great beer and an impressive list of underpriced Scotch. I was drinking diet Pepsi and had to get up and go get my own refill (when I have a beer, someone asks if I want another faster than a Porsche can hit 0-60). As Einstein said, god is in the details (and we should listen; he was a pretty smart guy). However, the management IS paying attention, and the Free House, more often than not, is a place where the food and service are both solid.
