  • It was a very difficult decision to admit our teenager to a behavioral health facility but we were very concerned about his welfare and hoped that he could get good, intensive, experienced help. This was a voluntary admission. The first question that I asked at his intake was if we could take him out whenever we wanted to, and I was assured that we could. What they DIDN'T say is that they would call state child protective services if we took him home before they wanted us to. We went to visiting hours each night and after speaking with our child the second night decided that this facility was not helping him, in fact it was doing the opposite. It seemed like the kids were simply being babysat and did not have mental health support. We felt that our son was not safe at Oasis and would be safer and better cared for at home. When we asked to take him home, and explained to the nurse on duty why, she completely agreed with us and explained that if we waited until morning to speak with the psychiatrist, she was sure he would agree and release our son, but that if we took him that night it would be "AMA" against medical advice and that he might contact CPS. We decided we were doing the right thing for our son and would be happy to explain that to the psychiatrist and to CPS, and asked to release him. The nurse informed me that the psychiatrist did contact CPS, which means that she had spoken to him before we left, but he was not willing to speak with us over the phone that night. We were able to find outpatient providers, activities, and groups to support him, and searched for and found another school that is a better fit. Thanks to Oasis, Child Services, or the Department of Child Safety, has left a business card on our door, so I called and left a message and never got a response. Today, weeks later, my son handed me a business card for the DCS Specialist that PULLED HIM OUT OF CLASS at his new school to ask him questions. If you are thinking of admitting your child here because they are suicidal and need constant watch, or are addicted to drugs, the babysitting Oasis provides might be helpful, but if you are looking for a place to actually help a depressed teenager, look for other options.
