| - My group and I went to the Mystery Room at the Downsview location. My group of 6 did the "Pandemic" room, which required us to have our phone (fully charged) because of an app that is required for the room and story. It was basically $120 for 6 of us ($20 per person)
SCENARIO OVERVIEW** (can skip to review
A quick overview about the room without giving too much away. With your phone, you are needed to download an app "gamedoomsday" which is part of the game , if you do not have a phone or app doesn't work on your phone, they will provide one for you. Once downloaded you will be taken to the room and will be connected to an in house internet server. Afterwards, the story is explained that you will be a character in the scenario of a radiation environment and you need to upkeep your levels of health, hunger, thirst, and injury. All of these levels are seen on the app when everything is set up and you will be utilizing QR codes with items (like QR code on bottles, and food) in the room to upkeep with all of your essential levels to stay alive. You will be using this app throughout the game which is why it is important to have a fully charged phone or device
**NOTE** that if you exit out of the app, you will be disconnected from the server/die in the game. I answered a phone call out of habit and I was basically dead through half the game.
REVIEW**
With all that said, just wanted to note that the staff were really friendly and accommodating to some of my friends who were somewhat late. Now the idea of the app sounded very intriguing and would seem to add to the game. However I personally felt that it didn't and it just felt like a tomagatchi that needed to be fed with water, food and first aid kits. The character to me seemed like it could survive the whole our if you fed it and gave it water. Most of the time my group and I completely forgot about our app and just kept playing.
Now the actual gameplay of the escape room, the production quality of the room isn't that high at all. There are just rooms held up by painted wood where if another group from another room slightly yelled, you would easily be able to hear them. There was one instance that there was a locked flap (wooden square with a lock) on the door, without even opening the lock, i opened it slightly and a first aid kit came out. I sooned relized that a key that we found is suppose to be used to open the lock for the first aid, but I didn't even need it. So I would just say there were some aspects of the room that was poorly designed
However some of the puzzles themselves were at least interactive rather than some escape rooms that just dealt with "whats the number for this lock", you're able to use keypads, coloured buttons and so on (without giving too much away) which I found very exciting. But also there were some locks that you had to know regarding general knowledge (ex: What's the square km of Canada, which obviously none of us knew), these general knowledge questions weren't needed to progress for the game, but to gain more access to bottles and food and so on.
Overall, I had some fun with what the escape room had to offer, I wouldn't recommend this specific room to other people. On the website it supposedly has a 36% success rate, which we were not successful in my books ( we got out in 1.5 hours rather than the 1 hour we were supposed to have). Bottom line, would I come back? Maybe, but I would come back to a room that someone here recommended highly.
