| - I made a mistake letting my membership a another gym lapse. I had signed up not long after they opened in Village Center, so I had a great yearly rate. But lots of travel, some illness, and an awful back condition made me lose my mojo, and so away it went. But I'm baa-a-ckk, and ready to turn myself into JLo (ha!), so I started my search.
Anytime is closest to my house, and I don't ask for much, just decent machines, late hours, and a reasonable amount of cleanliness. And Anytime was offering a 7-day pass.
So I show up at around 7 p.m., and the door is locked. Ringing the bell didn't produce anyone. Despite the sign warning members that their credit card would be charged $10 if they let anyone in on their member card swipe, a guy came along behind me and let me in. The place was a ghost town. Except for the few people working out, there was absolutely no manager or even a trainer in sight. The little office cubicle was locked and dark. A defibrillator on the wall gave me an even creepier feeling: who'd be there to use it, if necessary? I'm older, but plenty of young athletes in great physical shape have been known to collapse. Not that a manager on duty would necessarily be Dr. House, but someone's gotta be in charge, for lots of reasons. I could also envision myself showing up to work out and being all alone in that place, where everything else in the shopping center is closed. That's scary.
But what about the equipment? It's sparse. About 5 treadmills and ellipticals, one stairmaster, and one machine for each body part. The one exception is that there are three that target shoulders. I don't know about you, but I really don't give a flying f*** about my shoulders, but I do know that I like to vary the equipment I use. Otherwise I get bored. But I wouldn't be able to do that here.
A couple of the few people there were very friendly, offering to show me how to work the machines. I didn't need that, but I did need the info that one woman offered, and that was that she's paying the same as I'd pay at my former gym if I were to buy that membership at Costco and fork over a ton of money upfront for a 2-year membership. I was shocked that Anytime Fitness could charge so much for so little. The machines I tried were in good working order, but at those prices, I won't be activating that free pass anytime soon. My gym quest didn't stop here, and it was a big turnoff.
