If you're black you may not be as welcomed as the other patrons, I wasn't.
Long story: There were 5 people in our party, three visiting from LA and 2 were locals. There was 2 Asian girls, 1 white male, 1 Latino male and me(black male). Before standing in line at Maya we asked the bouncer outside what was the cover charge and he said no cover tonight so we decided to wait in line. First up was the latino male who was searched (standard procedure) then he went in then I was searched and when I attempted to walk in the girl in the entrance stamping hands stopped me and said "So the're a 10 dollar cover". I said okay and pulled for my wallet and then told white guy who was just searched "said so apparently there is a cover". She assumed I was alone and when she saw him she said "the cover is just for the guys". He said what about the first guy that you just let in? She said "whatever, just go in". Once we all got in we decided to leave, I normally buy a few round of drinks for my group but I didn't want to spend my money where I wasn't welcomed wholly.
I don't mind paying a cover charge, $10 of getting off easy in comparison to LA clubs. But if there's a cover charge then it should be for everyone or whichever gender is selected ahead of time and not as a deterrent to discourage black people, weed out poor blacks or have black people pay for the pleasure of being tolerated.
Kinda put a damper on the night out of the weekend AZ trip.
