  • Good Lord, it's so annoying when a business has an ineffective social media presence. I've been trying to write a favorable review for Canyon Café for ages, and every time I go to answer a question for myself, I stumble into their social media circle of death. Their Website: Outdated. Facebook: More like an online journal than a business website. 579 Likes. No recent posts. Mostly my photos from previous visits. Press: Two old propaganda "articles;" one from New Times and one from DTPHX; and one random blogger piped in several years ago to say they liked their multicolored chips. Twitter/Instagram: ?? But why is their website and social media important to your Yelp restaurant review? Why? W H Y?? I'll tell you why: The owners don't care enough to invest in their own company's public image; they're not on top of their game; something's amiss, but what? According to their website, "at the end of 2002, Bruce Lazarus and Doug Czufin led a small group of dedicated managers and chefs from the large public company and began operating a small private company..." Ugh, what?!? What large public company? What small private company? Which chefs? What are you talking about? Well, I'll tell you. Canyon Café Acquisition Company LLC, is a former subsidiary of Avado Brands Inc. It seems that the website is suggesting that Canyon Café is somehow better because it's now held by smaller company than it was previously held by, yet it's held by a company dedicated to acquisitions. And, as a side note, plenty of great restaurants are held by big corporations, but whatever, you do you, Canyon Café. It goes on to say, "...that's what the Southwest is all about..." But according to their website, they have locations in Missouri. Is Missouri the Southwest? Then it randomly says, "visit our sister restaurant 1130 The Restaurant at the AZ Center," with no links nor explanation. Ok, but HOW'S the restaurant? How's their food? THE STORY & SERVICE EXPERIENCE My friends and I have been going to the Arizona Ultimate Women's Expo at the Phoenix Convention Center for years, and depending on what food/restaurant they want to try, that's what we do. And one of those times, they picked Canyon Café. Canyon Café is in a SUPER pretty location. The courtyard, with the mature palms and water fountains, are delightful. Also, the architecture is lovely. They also have a very cozy patio setup. We sat at the bar, and although it wasn't packed, the service wasn't fast. The chips were indeed multicolored, and the salsa seemed scratch-made. I preferred the fresh guacamole. I'm all about the frozen mango margaritas. They were very good, albeit a tad watery. We also tried their chicken quesadilla, which I liked very much. I'm a sucker for cheese melted on a tortilla, and folded over. The server/bartender was pleasant, not fast, and not memorable in general: Break even. CONCLUSION I can't see how this business stays alive, other than from the weekday downtown crowd and the Phoenix Convention Center traffic. The atmosphere is the best part. Canyon Café is good, but not specifically seek it out good. 4/5 RECOMMEND OF NOTE *Locations: San Antonio, Texas, St. Louis, Missouri, and Phoenix, Arizona. *Parking is dreadful. Good luck. *For more information: canyoncafe.com
