  • I was really, really pumped to go to the Pompeii exhibit, as I wasn't aware it was even here. I passed by it on my way to the hotel and I knew I needed to go there during my trip. I moseyed on over after lunch on a beautiful breezy day. The building is huge, and there is a long walk to the actual ticket desk. I did some research prior to arriving, so I knew I had to buy a ticket to get into Pompeii. There's an additional fee tacked along to just getting into the Center, which I wasn't all that upset about in the beginning. I also bought a ticket to some 3D weather movie, which started about 10 minutes after I arrived. I waited around for the movie to start instead of exploring; I would say it's because I didn't want to be late, but in reality it's because I couldn't figure out where the entrance to the theater was. There wasn't clear cut signage posted, and the girl at the ticket counter was friendly but unhelpful with directions. I eventually figured it out and sat down. The movie was informative but uneventful; I thought I was essentially watching a 3D version of Planet Earth, but instead I ended up watching a blown up documentary that was taken off the Discovery Channel. I was sad that I paid money for it. There was a 45 minute time lapse between the movie and the time I chose for the Pompeii exhibit, so I went off to explore the Center. The layout is very confusing, and I found myself easily lost. I eventually made my way up to the 3rd floor, which hosted interesting facts about natural disasters (tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.). This is personally my favorite topic, so I was able to learn some things and kill some time before my exhibit. When the time finally came around, I had a wonderful time looking through the artifacts in the exhibit. I was kind of annoyed at the screaming children throughout, but hey, what're you going to do? If I seemed to enjoy my time, why only 3 stars? While the center is gorgeous and offers up a lot of interesting information, the layout is difficult and there isn't much way in signs or employees to help. The place is huge and could benefit from a reworking of the exhibits to better suit everyone's preferences. I honestly only come to science centers to look at certain things - physics and anything electrical just don't interest me. There wasn't really a rhyme or reason as to why things were placed next to each other, and every time I thought I was getting to something good I ended up disappointed. Also, this is a very popular field trip destination. I love kids, but sometimes I want to explore without the nuisance of constant screaming. However, these types of museums are meant for inquisitive children and patient adults, so if I were to go back it would be my responsibility to ensure that I can have a positive experience without disturbing the groups. (i.e. maybe call ahead and see if there are any schools expected in house before arriving?). Lastly, I do think they overcharge for what's in there. It seems to be on par with other science museums, but the exhibits and tidbits provided (except Pompeii) weren't as interesting or engaging as other museums I've been to. If I want an entertaining, interactive & informative display of science, I think I'll be heading to COSI.
