Fat Choy is another promising restaurant from Sheridan Su but at least with this first visit, I'm not sure I was totally sold on the concept or the food.
The restaurant itself is a weird mish mash of items from a really classic diner feel mixed with some food truck trappings. Perhaps it was the location itself (the Eureka Casino) that also didn't help - Fat Choy is tucked away near the front entrance's left corner, but the really smoky interior and odd smells make for an odd first impression.
Menu-wise, there's a mix of diner and Chinese food here from breakfast to late dinner. There's also some beer and wine options available with some dessert as well. I opted for the Fat Buddha beer and the short rib rice bowl. The beer was about $5 and the bowl was about $14. The bowl came with the short rib, some mixed greens (with a choice of sauce), rice and a choice of an added egg for extra. There's another sauce mixed in here as well which probably had the best impression - being tangy and a little sour. The rest of the dish however was just okay. The short rib tasted a little off to me for some reason (not that tender) and the bowl dish from the rice to the salad were fairly bland. The egg helped the most and I wish I mixed the yolk in more with the rice for instance to make for a better dish.
Service was also a little hit-or-miss for me. I waited in the front for about 10 minutes before being helped (didn't see any staff) although after being seated, service seemed to be smoother with a shorter wait on food.
I'm totally wiling to give the restaurant another try (after trying the really delightful Flock & Fowl) but at least the first go-around was a little ho-hum.
