I ate at this Lupie's on Saturday 11/30 about 7pm. Unfortunately it was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in years. I will explain:
When I arrived I was greeted by one of the two waitresses and told to sit anywhere since they were not very crowded. I chose a benched table even though I was dining alone. The waitress immediately asked if there was anything I wanted to drink. Then I asked if there were any daily specials and she said that they had a roast pork entree in addition to the standard Saturday quiche special. I ordered the roast pork with broccoli casserole (daily special) and baked apples as the two sides. So far so good.
Then my initial good experience started to change. I ordered a beer and left briefly to go wash my hands (like my Momma always taught me). Upon returning the opened can of beer was there, but there was no glass nor silverware. I tried to get some waitress attention but could not; so I went to the serving station and asked for a glass. A few minutes later the food was delivered along with the silverware. As usual at Lupie's, the portions were generous.
As soon as I prepared to eat, I noticed that the pork appeared to be overcooked and very dried out. Upon cutting the meat it was confirmed. Again it was difficult getting attention from the waitress. When she came over, I told her the meat was dry and asked if they had any gravy or something else to moisten the meat. She went away and then returned to simply say "no gravy". So I decided to use the Cholula sauce that's at every table and then started eating. The Cholula helped a little but I didn't want to drown the meat with that much hot sauce. The broccoli tasted pretty good but the cheese topping was very crusty and not fresh. The apples were OK but seemed overcooked also.
After eating maybe half the meal, I went to the serving station and asked the prep staff if they had anything to moisten the meat. Again the answer was "no gravy". NO ONE (server or prep) ever asked what was wrong or is there anything else I would like. In desparation I asked for Heinz 57 but even that couldn't salvage the meat. So I left half the pork on the plate.
I was so disappointed and irritated with this experience that I asked to speak to the manager or cook (since I felt that the food should not have left the kitchen). A different waitress returned and said that no one was available to talk to me. I took that as a refusal. However, I was told that I did not have to pay for the meal, which is the least that should have been done. Also, I left without even leaving a tip since I felt that the wait staff also let me down and did not try to represent me the customer. That has happened only a couple of times in my entire life.
There is one final chapter in this saga. Before I posted this review I called the restaurant and asked the owner to call me. Larkin called me later and I explained my story. She told me that she was there during my meal working in the kitchen, but she did not prepare my plate. She then questioned my judgement by stating that there were other customers eating the same pork with no complaints. She even stated there was a compliment. I don't see how that was possible unless I happened to receive the last portion from the end of the roast. Then she let it slip that the roast was actually left over from Friday because that had been a light day, being just after Thanksgiving. For me that was the answer: I had been served leftover meat that had been re-heated. No wonder it was dry!
Throughout my conversation with Larkin she was polite but refused to apologize for the serving of a subpar meal with leftover meat. That's it for me and Lupie's Huntersville. I will continue to patronize the original restaurant but not this one.
