| - I absolutely love this museum. The permanent collection is well established, and the operation is top notch.
MUST SEE:
Today, I go to go see the David Bowie exhibition and spent five hours learning about Bowie who is more of a true artist than some of the pretenders out in the art world. His body of work may not be high brow or pretentious, but it certainly is real art and he is worthy of the tag artist for his vision and message.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME:
I also had the opportunity to see the Ai Weiwei exhibition. I've seen his DVD documentary prior to this and have followed some of his rants throughout his days as a dissident in China. To call him an artist is to insult true artists everywhere. His methods as of late are sloppy and lazy. He had potential in his New York period and in some of his other works, but today, is simply a political activist who has set his claws into the art community who now seem to back him without question.
His recent art is vulgar, unimaginative, and an insult to art lovers because he takes the art and his followers for granted; throwing 3,000 + ceramic crab on the ground in protest of the government tearing down his studio as art...well, is a stretch. He has a few nice pieces (Moon Chest, Map of China) and can be really good if he just paid attention to his art rather than rant against the government (don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of the Chinese government, but as an art lover, I do get insulted when I'm taken for a ride). AGO should be embarrassed to be associated with the AWW exhibit not for political reasons...just for the sake that it is not good art...perhaps rubbish and laughable are two good words.
Ai Weiwei has become a fraud just as is the name of his studio in China called "FAKE"...that's right the emperor has no clothes, he's telling people straight out he is a fake and the Ai worshippers still gobble it up.
It's time for Ai to bring his art back up from a footnote to his political dissident to powerful art with a strong political message.
UPDATE: February 19, 2014
Whilst in Miami, Ai Wei Wei's exhibit saw a Miami artist take one of his vases and smashed in to bits at the Perez Art Museum. Funny how it's was acceptable for AWW to smash priceless vases for his 'art'; yet it is not okay for another to smash AWW's 'art' in the name of "art". Hypocrite.
The AGO is a wonderful place to appreciate art in all its forms. I just hope they don't bring Ai Weiwei back anytime soon.
