| - Imperial Pub is a bit of a dive, but awesome because this is exactly what it is, and it's conveniently located near Dundas Square.
Great place for groups to meet for a drink or for a drink with a friend after the movie (there is a cineplex next door... just in case you didn't know).
The pub presents itself with an old school layout and decor which gives the place its unique atmosphere.
It's distributed on three different levels:
- street level: this is that part of the pub you all can see and that is, like I was saying in the opening, a bit of a dive. Here is where mostly all the regulars and the drinkers of the day hours are coming.
- second floor/level: this is probably where you may want to head up. There is a set of stairs accessible directly from the pub or there is a separate entrance directly from the street: welcome to the Imperial Pub Library lounge. The atmosphere in the Library is warm and cozy with brick walls bookcases, plant filled windows, a pool table and lots, lots of couches.
Sometimes though, there is a smell of "humid" upstairs that could result unpleasant to some (this is the main reason why I gave 3 stars).
- third floor/level: a rooftop patio. This is accessible directly from the Library lounge and to get there you have to walk where the bar is and just to its right, there is a small set of stairs that leads you to it. The area is pretty spacious but not well served.
The food is the typical pub fare and the portions are decent, reasonably priced and brought to your table fairly quickly. While the service is friendly, sometimes I felt they are a little disengaged.
We had a chilli steak sandwich and chicken wings. Although the food wasn't too bad, it didn't blow my mind.
They definitely improved the beer selection having much more local breweries instead of the usual ones from the big players. This, and the Library lounge, are great excuses for me to come here.
Considering the prices you get charged when you go to the pub downtown and the fact that for the most part they all look the same, the Imperial Pub certainly stands out in a positive way. This is one of those places that is almost like a landmark for the city and surely.
Overall, I feel the Imperial Pub is a great place that worths to pay a visit.
TIP: if you stay at the hotel across the street, Bond Place, you are offered discounts if you come here.
