| - A second addition to the original Kensington Market location, this Millie is considerably more difficult to find: it's basically on Spadina and King, on King, on a little side street next to a cafe.
Minimal-chic on the inside, the bare white walls draw your eyes towards the glass case by the checkout displaying multicoloured small tartless, sponge/cheesecake hybrids, and mille-feuille cakes, flanked by another glass case of gelato.
On my visit today, I sampled the Khao San Road collaborative flavours of pandan (a leaf often used in the Thai cooking) and Thai Tea (which tastes exactly like the stuff you'd get in the restaurant). Though the little cream puff (gelato puff?) sample display was tempting, at almost $4 a pop I was more inclined towards the pastries.
I eyeballed the rare cheesecake tarts before opting for a couple slices of mille-feuille, which rang in at a rather pricey $18.
There were four mille-feuille cakes available: strawberry & champagne, vanilla bean, matcha, and tiramisu. Opting for the strawberry & champagne and the matcha, I pretty much ate the strawberry & champagne one immediately.
Light and fluffy Japanese crepes housed champagne-mixed whipped cream and little smudges of strawberry jam here and there. The ingredients seem to have been used sparingly, so there's not much strawberry jam or champagne flavour. Each bite is consistent in filling to crepe ratios though, so I'm pretty sure it done in thoughtful consideration to enjoy the crepes themselves too.
I have yet to steal bites from my partner's matcha slice, but if he refuses to share...well, that just gives me an excuse and try that cheesecake tart!
