| - My friend and I decided to stop in the other day after walking through the Art Fest so we could get some food and watch the Steeler game. They made some nice changes to the interior and it looks good (aka: cleaner and less smoke-logged than Docs). I think they still need some "décor" to help it feel less like a big cavernous space where you sit and drink beer and more like a fun and comfortable environment. They might also want to reconsider the placement of their high-top tables and the dart game. The flow of traffic and safety of those standing anywhere near the dart game (watch your head!) quickly became a nightmare as business picked up in the evening. And, it really doesn't have to be that way, there is plenty of space, they just need to make better use of it. We never went upstairs to check out the outdoor bar and spent the evening on the main floor. The Yelp info lists the noise level as "Average". Let's just say I'd hate to hear it "Above Average". It was pretty loud. Again, more things on the walls could help with loud echo effect they've got going on.
When we first arrived, it wasn't all that busy and they actually seemed over-staffed: several wait staff, bartenders and men (more than one) who I assume were managers. We were told that they were serving a limited menu because of the high traffic with the Art Fest happening just outside. (About an hour after that we saw people with full menus in hand ordering food yet we were never given that option....odd.) At first, we were well attended to by a gentleman (an owner/manager?) and our waitress. We ordered the appetizer sampler and it was hot and tasty; really hit the spot. Things slid downhill rather quickly, though. Our waitress told us her shift was ending and turned us over to another waitress who I believe forgot that we were there. The Steeler game began and, as you would expect, business picked up, however all of the staff that were on hand earlier seemed to be completely missing, with the exception of the bartenders. If you were sitting at the bar, you were being well served, it seemed. Our waitress finally decided to stop by the table and we ordered a pizza at the start of the game which took a full hour to arrive. At no point during this hour did our waitress stop by to check in, nor were there any explanations or apologies for the wait once our food arrived. Adding insult to injury, the pizza looked great....it tasted like cardboard. The whole night started out with a lot of promise but fell flat.
Altogether, I am not sure if this was a case of an understaffed Saturday night or a new restaurant still getting into their groove....or both. I am not ready to dismiss Mario's just yet, though. I will give it some time and go back again. They have some great daily drink specials (even on the weekends) and other things on the menu looked good.
