My boyfriend's uncle discovered Island Style when the clan was vacationing in Las Vegas. We were skeptical of the high reviews on Yelp might have been skewed because of the area and for being a "fusion" restaurant, but we were pretty impressed! The owner is Korean and her husband (Russell) is Hawaiian/Japanese, which explains why their restaurant offers a variety of Asian foods.
SERVICE
We pretty much interacted with Russell the entire meal, he was easy to get along with and cracked jokes with the boyfriend's dad. This is the type of mom and pop/family service that anyone can appreciate!
FOOD
Mandu (Dumplings) - 5/5
They were hand made by the owner and had really fresh ingredients. I loved how there was vermicelli within the meat/veggie mixture.
Pork & Cabbage Hawaiian Plate - 4/5
I liked how the cabbage was shredded and cooked with the pork rather than hour fast food Hawaiian places cook whole pieces of cabbage that hardly get eaten. Add some sriracha and it enhances the flavor of this rice plate. The only thing I didn't like was the macaroni salad, not that best I've ever had!
Korean Cold Noodles - 4/5
My boyfriend got this dish and it was really refreshing for a hot summer night. They give you a pair of scissors to cut the buckwheat noodles yourself and a bottle of spicy mustard (mustard with wasabi?) . I enjoyed a small bowl of it to accompany my rice dish and found it to be very enjoyable.
OVERALL
I think we've food another good restaurant pick for a future trip to Vegas. Even though it's off the strip, it's worth a trip out here.
