| - Mr. T and I kept telling each other that we needed to check out Spitfire every time we drove past it (which is often, since we live in the area). Last night, we decided it was time.
We're so glad we did.
Spitfire is one of those places where you get a good feeling right when you first walk in the door. The ambiance is low-key, sophisticated but not intimidating, with a genuinely "warm" feeling that's accented by the colors and furnishings. We didn't sit in the bar area, but it looked like it could accommodate a decent amount of people without it feeling as though everyone is packed in.
We got there at 8, and were a tad concerned that perhaps we'd be getting the "end of the day" treatment, since they were closing at 9. Nothing could be further from the truth. The woman who seated us in the dining area was also our server and she was wonderful -- friendly, knowledgeable, prompt and never made us feel as though she was watching the clock. We asked her for recommendations from their (extensive) beer list, and mentioned we preferred to "drink local." She explained the local beers they have and we loved the fact that they were the only place left in the Valley that still had any of Four Peak's seasonal brew -- I had that and it was great. My husband had a beer that was brewed in Tucson (he's a Wildcat, so he wanted to give Tucson some love) and he really enjoyed that as well.
On to the food.
They immediately brought a complimentary basket of crackers and some house-made hummus. It was so good, I wanted to lick the bowl clean. Yes, it was THAT good. We ordered the calamari appetizer and you could just tell that it was made fresh, not frozen and thawed. It was lightly breaded and lightly fried and the dipping sauce had a mildly sweet/spicy flavor. Loved it. That will be a regular order for me, for sure.
For the entree, I ordered their cuban sandwich with a side of fries (I debated the side salad, but decided to splurge). Their cuban sandwich is SO good -- it came toasted with just the right amount of meat and spread. I'm not a fan of sandwiches that pack so much onto them that you can't pick out individual flavors and with this one, every bite I took was this perfectly balanced taste. And the fries were outstanding -- not greasy, not under- or over-done, crispy without being crunchy -- with just a tiny hint of seasoning.
My husband ordered their half-pound burger with bacon, white cheddar cheese and mushrooms. He kept going, "Mm-hmmm" every time he took a bite and wouldn't share it with me. I did manage to get an onion ring from him, though, and if I hadn't been so full, I might have offered to pay him to give me another one.
By the time we finished, it was well after their closing time (I felt bad!), but our server never mentioned it -- in fact, she chatted with us for a few minutes about the food and the restaurant when she delivered our check.
Spitfire just became our very favorite neighborhood restaurant/bar. The food is outstanding (and organic/local!), the ambiance is fantastic, the service is awesome, the prices are reasonable and you can tell the owners know what they're doing and do it well. I highly recommend it!
