| - I am a HUGE reader, and I have a fairly extensive vintage/antique book collection. I dedicate a lot of time to hunting for additions to my collection in places other than high end bookshops. If I did my shopping exclusively at The Monkey's Paw my collection would be far, far more sparse. The prices here are outrageous. Some of it is understandable, but some of it isn't. The atmosphere is a bit intimidating, as it's a small room with the owner camped out in the middle, and it doesn't feel like the kind of place you're supposed to have a lot of fun in (and I say this as a person who prefers quiet in every aspect of their life).
The big draw is the book vending machine, I suspect. I got two books instead of one, and I was made to choose between giving the second back to the owner or paying for it, which just seemed a bit of spoilsport move-I was obviously really excited to have been gifted this rare bit of luck, and it's a dollar, man.
I was able to find a nice copy of a book I'd been looking for and spent far too much on it. There are some truly incredible finds here, but it's unlikely this will be a regular stop for me. I don't mind shelling out for a first edition, for example, but paying steep prices for easily thrifted Penguins from the 70s and the like isn't worth it for me.
