Higher ground is one of those strange Calgary places that seems to enjoy a much better reputation than it actually deserves. It's like a whole generation of customers grew up thinking that all you need for a great coffee shop is a quirky decor and a punny name.
The coffee and food are wholly unremarkable, the service varies from competent to atrocious, and the decor...well, they have a fireplace! (which you will sometimes find running on the hottest days of the year. Seriously, I once administered first aid to a woman who passed out from the stifling heat in this place on a summer evening...though that was a couple years ago, so they might have gotten AC by now).
It's pretty sad that in a city which has fostered some incredible coffee culture (Fratello & P&S) these guys seem to just coast along on a choice location and a pretty facade.
Though at least they're not charging for WIFI now...Seriously, until recently these jokers expected you to pay to use their WIFI. Think of this as an indicator of their conception/concern for the customer experience.
