| - My wife and I booked reservations for a king room in January for a Dodger's spring training three-day weekend in February. We are Hilton HHonors members. To get our points we book through the Hilton website.
Since our flight arrived later at night on Thursday, my wife suggested I call the hotel direct to confirm our late arrival which I did. I do have to admit that the "twenty questions" was a bit offputting before I could get to my issue. Finally, I was confirmed.
So upon our arrival at about 10:00 p.m we presented at the reception desk and were told that there were no king rooms available. "But," I said, "we have reservations for a king room, and I called here to confirm late arrival." Nevertheless, all that was available was a room in a different category (a double double). We said we had no choice and accepted it. I mean, what else could we do at 10pm? They did offer a 30% discount on the room rate and free breakfast for both of us.
So when we arrived at the room we found that it was a room for the disable. Without going into all the details the most offputting feature to me was the shower that is cut into the bathroom with a simple curtain in front of it. Reminds me of my first trip to Italy in the '80's, or back in high school, or when I had surgery and a nurse had to watch me shower in case I fell. While I felt this was a real pain, I did come away from the experience with more empathy for the disabled.
Still, it was clearly not what I had reserved. When we went to check out on Sunday morning we were asked by the MOD if "everything was alright?" I probably would not have mentioned it but there was that big gaping hole he just gave me to fill in. So I told him that things would have been fine IF it had been the room we reserved and not a different category disabled room; I am guessing the last room in the house. Of course, you know what happened to my original room on the first weekend of spring training... The manager comp'd one night altogether which was appreciated but we would have happily paid full price for what we reserved.
We have only been HHonors members for a couple of years, having no problem with our stay in a Boston Hilton but an absolutely awful experience at the Hilton in Dana Point, CA (reviewed previously) when our oldest daughter had the wedding party and guests checked in with about 20 rooms reserved. Was tough getting a room for the bride in time for the rehearsal(seriously).
My SIL travels weekly (as a private pilot) both nationally and internationally and always uses Marriott for the points. I'm beginning to rethink our HHonors membership. Batting only 33% so far...
