  • Dr. Gatlin refused to see me because I refused to sign the mandatory arbitration document that was included in his paperwork. The lady working at the front desk asked me to sign the document after she saw that I had left that sheet blank. I told her that I was not comfortable signing away my rights. She stated that the doctor would not see me if I did not sign the arbitration sheet. I told her that I was not aware that signing that document was mandatory. She brought the office manager out, and the office manager proceeded to explain what the sheet meant. I explained to her that I understood what the document said, and that I would not sign away my constitutional rights. I further explained that I have never sued anyone, and that while I had no future plans to sue anyone, I wished to retain my rights to do so in the unlikely event that it became necessary. I also pointed out the 6th bullet point on the arbitration document (the one they were so adamant that I sign or else not be treated) that read 'signing of the arbitration document was not a condition of my being treated.' The office manager said "If you don't sign, he doesn't see you." I said alright, and I left the office. I stepped outside and did a quick google search to see if being refused service because I refuse to sign away my rights was legal. I quickly found that it is not a legal practice. I stepped back inside the office. I quietly asked the front office lady if I could get them to put into writing that I was being refused treatment because I refused to sign away my rights, and I asked for a copy of the paperwork I had filled out and given to her. She left to confer with the office manager. She came back and stated that the office manager would not give me a copy of any paperwork because it belonged to the medical office. She further stated that the office manager would not be putting the Dr.'s refusal to see/treat me into writing, but that because I did not sign, I would not be seen. I informed the front office lady that I felt discriminated against because the doctor was seeing the patients who complied with his request to sign the arbitration document, while refusing to see me simply because I wished to retain my rights. I told her that I would be filing a complaint because something seemed wrong and unfair about the situation. She listened politely then wished me a good evening. I left quietly, but I was extremely upset and embarrassed. I waited three weeks for that appointment, and I sat in the office filling out paperwork for the better part of 45 minutes just to be turned away because I am informed of my rights and I opted not to sign them away.
