| - Many bars in Montreal require the walk and pray. Basically you can't see the bar until you walk up a flight of stairs from the sidewalk, and you pray it's good. Most of these bars charge a cover, which can be a complete rip off. Bootlegger does not, and was perhaps my favorite surprise of Montreal.
Inside is a very attractive speakeasy atmosphere. We plopped ourselves at the bar and were quickly handed complimentary popcorn. The bartender, in a 1930's outfit complete with suspenders, was fluent in English and fantastic. While the specialty cocktails focus on whiskey, there are numerous other options. Prices were shockingly reasonable compared to my hometown ($8 Canadian for an Old Fashioned with top shelf???).
Best of all, there was a magician. I'm a sucker for magic, and he did not disappoint. With a whiskey fueled glaze in my eye, I'm fairly certain I proclaimed "That's amazing!!!" in a pre-pubescent squeak at least a dozen times. Once again, it was amazing!
The atmosphere, drinks and prices were all winners at Bootleggers, and I felt the most comfortable here out of the many bars during my weekend trip. It's worth checking out.
