What's not to love about Schenley Plaza? It's a wonderful green, community space, surrounded by beautiful buildings like the Cathedral of Learning and Carnegie Library. In the midst of all the commotion of Oakland you are offered a beautiful place to socialize, relax or partake in one of the many activities going on.
I enjoyed this space as a long time resident of Shadyside, as well as when working in Oakland. It offers a lot. Start the day with a cup of coffee (there's a nice walk up window at The Porch), or sit and people watch while having lunch (from one of the many kiosks). Or in warmer weather enjoy a book on the lawn. They even offer yoga and tai chi, and a Farmer's Market on Fridays. The Plaza is easy to get to. Buses are easily accessible on Fifth or Forbes. And parking is free on Sundays.
For me what makes a city really liveable, and enjoyable, is the mix of urban with great community spaces like this. Let's just hope the powers that be remember this in their rush to develop every inch of the East End.
