| - 4 stars for their happy hours and service, 2.5 stars for food/drinks/value outside of happy hour
Despite my slightly-less-than-enthusiastic rating, I am going to preface this review by saying that Harris Grill holds a very special place in my heart. It's definitely not a place to take your "foodie" or wine/cocktail enthusiast type friends, and it would be hard to convince me to come here outside of the happy-hour hours, but it is a staple of the pittsburgh grad student experience.
Happy hours at Harris Grill are very happy hours, indeed. Everything on the "fun things" appetizer list is $5, the wings--which are one of the tastier items on the menu--are half price, and frozen cosmopolitans and craft beers are all half price! Frozen cosmos are a Harris Grill specialty...and, if you're into that kind of drink, you will find them delicious. They are frosty cold, strong, and not too sweet, with a very pretty presentation. The craft beer tap list is always rotating and often includes an excellent selection (plus, you can't beat the $2.50-$3.50 prices).
The outdoor spaces are lovely -- the front patio (a prime location right on Ellsworth) is the best, and the smaller back patio is cute as well. Because they're so awesome in warm weather, you have to arrive earlier than 4:30 on weekdays to claim a table for your party if you're coming for happy hour.
Outside of happy hours, though, the food is very mediocre for the prices you're paying, and the craft beers are normally priced at $4.50-$7.00 (and suddenly the selection seems so much less impressive compared to the big beer bars like Fat Heads and D's Six Pax). The other drinks are fine enough, but nothing to write home about. They do brunch as well, but I was less than impressed with the food and my bloody mary.
The service can sometimes be slow during very busy days/hours, but it's almost always very friendly and goofy. Harris Grill servers are some of the most fun and accommodating of any place you'll find in Pittsburgh. They've done all kinds of weird things for my friends and me in the past, including accept their tip via personal check and move an entire couch for me because I dropped my purse behind it and could not reach it.
Despite the unimpressive quality of the food and drink value outside of happy hour, Harris Grill definitely has personality. This is not only evidence in their service but also in their menu! The menu has a cover that rotates through photographs of the staff making crazy faces and being silly, and it features dish names such as The Britney Spears (chicken tenders on a skewer) and Traditional Italian Divorce Soup. All of these things ultimately combine for an almost guaranteed fun time with friends. I just prefer to do it during happy hour!
