| - I cheated on my regular hair stylist...and I liked it. Don't judge me. It had to be done and now my hair looks absolutely fabulous thanks to Cyndy (with 2 y's) and her hair color eXpertise at Hair Color Xperts. And now, I'm like Cody with the Sister Wives: I got me more than just one (hair stylist that is) to go to.
My first stylist moved to a different shop 6 months or so ago. That shop will remain nameless as I don't wish to talk smack about it (but I will: when you go to book over the phone, they ask the length of your hair, when you're there, which I've never been but I heard, they actually weigh the dye - my ass would be paying $150 for just color, sans cut or highlights). He made mention that he had a booth at a friend's shop on his off day from the she-she salon. Unfortunately for me, that day is not convenient right now with my kids' after school activities combined with the fact he is out of the country for a few weeks. My hair was in desperate need of color and a cut STAT. My husband is the one who encouraged me to take a chance on another stylist, one nearby and more convenient to my schedule. He was right about my East LA find some years back (I miss you Maya!), so I decided, open up the Yelp and see who's got some stars. So glad I came across Hair Color Xperts here.
With the exception of two less than flattering reviews, overall, it seemed like a good bet. Besides, I wasn't asking for anything crazy. I just needed a cut and a fresh color over my accidental ombre and the grey hairs popping up on the top and sides of my head. I can only do so much box root touch up on my own before my mane becomes laughable. Cyndy hooked it up.
I was greeted right away with a smile and a consultation. The owner, Maria, came out and spoke to me to confirm the color and between the three of us, we concluded an overall base color of dark plum with a few wisps of a rich bright red thrown in for fun would be the ticket along with an inch and a half cut for the health of my hair. I was in an adventurous mood seeing that the colors looked great on the book, so I said, what the hell. YOLO as the kids said 2 years ago.
Believe you me, it's a major improvement. I spent almost 3 hours in the chair, Cyndy and I closed the shop with me as her last appointment of the day. She had to move her dinner reservation back a couple of times, but she didn't seem to mind as she effortlessly and expertly did the color with the red highlights. She cut my layers perfectly and did a blow out when she could've just scrunged it and sent me on my way so that she could get on with her night. Instead, she painstakingly took the time to blow out my thick head of hair so that I could see the full effect of the beautiful colors, which I call cherry cola. I LOVE it.
The bottom line: it's good to have a backup stylist who might in fact become my first stylist given the convenience, outcome and price. Oh I will be back and I may be bringing some friends with me once they get a look at my cherry cola hair.
