| - Super Store sells spoiled milk on discount!
On March 7, 2015 I found this Super Store was selling 1 L skim milks at 30% discount. I usually only buy 2 L milk. However, this time I still had some milk at home so I decided to buy 1 L skim milk. Since all their 1 L skim milk were at 30% discount, I had no choice but buy it as I only wanted 1 L milk.
I checked the expire date carefully. It was March 13th. (I took a picture of it on my cell phone so I have the proof). From March 7th to March 13th, there were 6 days - enough time for me to finish the milk. So I bought one carton.
The next day when I drank the milk cold. It tasted a bit funny. I ignored it. I may have drank the cold milk one more time till March 11th when I had time to heat the milk up. (I like warm milk rather than cold milk). It turned into jelly. Unspoiled milk wouldn't turn jelly when being heated up. So I knew it was spoild. I poured the milk into the drain.
On March 12th, one day before the milk's expire day, I went to Super Store with the left over milk and the receipt, told the customer service what happened, and demanded a refund. It was not much, only $1.48. I could have igored it. However, I believe when they marked down the price, they either knew or suspected the milk had already gone bad. It was about the principle. The service rep refunded my money. However, she pointed out to me that it printed on the 30% discount lable that it was the final sale. Then she gave me the "look", like I was this lowly person who was cheating $1.48 out of them. I told her they shouldn't have sold spoild milk to begin with. She was not impressed but didn't argue.
And hear this: I knew from experience that for a small amount of refund, such as $1.48, she could have given me the cash. Instead, she chose to refund it back to my credit card.
I would ignored the entire episode if not for her comment and the look, also, if not for the fact that a couple of weeks later (recently), I saw they marked down some other dairy products such as creams, with 30% down. I understand when there is only a day or two before the expire date, some stores mark down the price. But I checked the lable again, there were still a few days before the expire date. I suspect the same thing was happening. They either knew or suspected the creams had already gone bad so they marked the price down. It is just wrong to mark down spoild food with a lable saying this is the final sell.
This is why I am here.
A tip: Good milk won't turn jelly when you heat it up. Bad one will. Just a way to test it as sometimes our taste buds are not sensitive enough to detect the spoild milk at early stage.
