| - I never thought I would review a Chicken Shack at less than a 5/5, much less a 3/5. I've been a Shack man for the past 5 or so years, having been dozens of times in that span. I was excited to hear another one was opening in Henderson when they announced the Valle Verde location. My first trip was shortly after the grand opening. The chicken was ok but not quite up to par with the Sunset location, and the chili I got on my fries (if you're going to get a combo, do yourself a favor and always upgrade to the chili cheese fries) tasted a little off. I chalked it up to, "new store kinks." I've now been back twice, and only once have I gotten the delicious food I'd expected. This last time might've been my last at this location. If you've ever been to a Chicken Shack, you know that there are two main reasons you eat there: the juiciest chicken in the lightest, crispiest batter on Earth, and the variety of amazing sauces. This location seems to be experimenting with both--and unfortunately failing.
The batter used today was clearly a different recipe than the classic Shack recipe. It was somewhere between that light crispiness and the thick, crunchy breading you see on frozen chicken strips. Now, even this travesty could be salvaged by the BEST HONEY BARBECUE SAUCE ON EARTH, which they traditionally have. Seriously, I could write sonnets about the smokey, sweet goodness of their HBBQ sauce. But today's recipe for that was wrong too! It was sour, tasting vinegary like they'd tried to make it more like a buffalo sauce.
I'm still giving three stars because the shoestring fries were on point as usual, and they threw in an extra strip--an informal tradition across both locations, where they'll randomly throw in an extra strip if they think that one of the other strips is a little too small, or if they just feel like it. I'm hoping today was just a fluke and the kitchen had the B squad cooking & mixing sauce. If it's not, and these are the new recipes, PLEASE GO BACK!!
