  • There's been a revival of traditional barbershops over the past decade or so and Phoenix has a lot of good ones, but what it has been missing was a place with a little more of a punk ethos, and that's the void that True North fills. I've been following Ray at his Instagram account for the past few years (@SailingBarber) and have been impressed with his work so when I saw he had opened his own shop I decided to check it out. Although he can cut any type of hair, he really seems to enjoy cutting edgier styles such as pompadours, scumbag boogies, and flattops. He also specializes in trimming beards for those of us with facial hair. I should also note that Ray is a Navy veteran and very involved with his fellow vets. The place is very nice, with two chairs, bare brick walls, and a rock and roll vibe. Ray is very friendly and did a great job of cutting my hair and trimming my beard. He uses a combination of clippers and scissors to get the best haircut for you. He even has an area set up for photos so he can show his work on his Instagram feed. If you are looking for something a bit more modern than your typical barbershop, than find your True North and visit Ray at his shop. You won't regret it.
