| - A good vet should try to save you cost wherever possible. Pets will always get sick and I as a owner need to feel comfortable coming back and not feeling like I'm being ripped off.
Dr. D'Arcy was amazing the first time I came here, but Dr. Oscar is a different story. He's out to get your $$$$$. I had notice crackling when my dog coughed from her diagnosed collapse trachea, which I've seen for myself from a X-ray my last vet shared. I did a drop off at this clinic and mid day I got a phone call from Dr. Oscar, he wanted to run a blood test and X-ray because he wanted to make sure he got the numbers and visuals in order to diagnose. It was going to cost $600 but he told me he really needed to see the numbers so I allowed for him to proceed. The conclusion, we will put her back on steroids and wait for her blood work results which came back clean next day, she's healthy with no infections. I never did get to see these X-rays. I was simply told to come in pick up my dog the bill and the pills no words or time given with a vet.
When meds ran out, I called to get a refill and a vet, Kate, called back suggest we move her to an inhaler because it's easier on the body and a more targeted type of medication which maybe better. However she wants me to bring my dog back for a check up because she's afraid there might be an infection. I got irritated...my dog just had X-rays and blood tests aren't these in her file. I told her this but she told me I need to bring her back to get checked up. I gave all this a thought and noticed my dog wasn't getting better but worst as we moved to every other day treatments. I ended up calling and asked to talked to Dr. Oscar asking him if he can just put my dog on inhalers because the pills weren't working well. He seemed taken back...he wanted me to bring my dog back in for a check up and then he would have to order her an inhaler chamber which could cost $150+ and also the cost of meds. I would have to come back again for a demonstration on how to use the inhaler. So to get my dogs on different meds they want me to visit twice???
I started doing my own research. I found a highly rated inhaler chamber on amazon that only cost me $60 and I read up a ton on other dogs that switched to inhalers a lot of them had good results. And so I ordered and when it came in I emailed and asked to have an appointment so that they can prescribe me the inhalers and demonstrate at the same time. The reply was quick and friendly "we can see you during these time slots."
When I got there that day it was Dr. Oscar himself saw us. This was my first time seeing him with my dog. I told him I wanted inhalers for my dog he quickly questioned why and who told me this. I told him one of his vets suggested it. He tried to convince me oral treatment is best. I felt that he was trying very hard to get me to lose the idea of inhalers telling me if she's not getting better my dog might have lung worms and that he recommend I try this other test where she would come back every two weeks and they need to test her stool, etc. That they might have wrongly diagnosed and my old vet might've also made a mistake, which made me question if they even took her blood and X-rays. He was very sales men like and was very thrown off when I produced a chamber and stood my ground with no I did my research and my dog is known to have this condition and I would like to try inhalers. He finally gave in. I went home and googled lung worms..you can see these in an X-ray!
The last straw.. I came to pick up a written prescription and an inhaler they ordered for me. I was charged $107+tax for a steroid puffer and charged $21 for the written prescription for a bronchodilator because they could not source it. I went to my pharmacist and tried to pick up the medicine. Turns out the medicine Oscar was trying to prescribe does not exist in Canada and so I had to call for a new prescription. I had told them I was waiting at the pharmacy for the fax and if they can send this ASAP, It took 50mins... but to add a cherry on top the puffer they sold me would've cost me $54 at my pharmacy and my pharmacist told me how oral steroids are terrible on the kidneys and that I should wean my dog off of them if possible.
The eye specialist that saw my dog for her glaucoma wrote me a prescription for Free and wrote 20 for refills because he told me my dog will be on this for life. Dr. Oscar gave me enough pills for one month fully knowing she will be needing this for longer, wrote zero for refills on the bronchodilator for her chronic condition. What makes me most upset is that he could've included the steroid inhaler on my prescription that cost me money to write. Clearly he wanted the profits from inhaler that cost twice the price. I don't even want to know how much the chamber would've been marked up to but at least I was smart enough to save a visit. Livid.
