| - Even as a starving student or an impoverished worker at not-for-profit organizations, I have always failed to find the charm of Honest Ed's. Yeah, it's big, ostentatious, and full of cheap stuff, but it's not that big of a deal, for me anyway.
Set up by the late Ed Mirvish, this department store provides low-cost items to the public. So in touch was Ed with the local community that he'd give out free turkeys during the holidays to customers. So the store is anchored in kindness, that's sure enough. Once you're inside, the place is decidedly low-rent, as you'd expect an up-scale dollar store (and let's face it, that's pretty much what it is) to be. Aisles are choked with merchandise of varying quality, but you can't help but feel that most of the stuff is pretty tatty. If you find yourself in need of emergency merch, this is probably a good place to go for paper places, plastic table cloths, or other emergency items. Okay in a pinch or for the thrifty, but not much more.
