| - I had never been to this venue before, but I had heard good things.
A friend and I went to see Royksopp last night and what I thought was going to be a night of dancing and amazement ended up being a bit disappointing and in the end very offensive.
The positives:
Great sound system. Good lighting and whatnot. Relatively clean (bussers go around constantly picking up empties) Courteous bartenders (the girls were pretty and not snotty about it, and got you your drinks in a timely fashion even when the bar was mobbed)
The decor is kinda swaggy and modern. Not totally my thing, but it was pretty. Kind of reminded me of some LA clubs I have been to in the past. Not too shabby.
The negatives:
Well, first off... for a group like Royksopp, I don't see how they thought it was a good idea to pack the venue like a sardine can. I don't know what the legal capacity is in that place, but I am pretty sure they passed it. There was hardly any room to dance, so everyone just stood around for most of the show. It was pretty depressing. MAYBE it is a Toronto thing and people don't dance at shows... but its fucking ROYKSOPP, people. I was very disappointed that there was not enough room to get my groove on.
Second, they have a washroom attendant in the Ladies room, and last time I checked (or at least in my experience) their job isn't only to sit and hand you a towel and give you sad eyes for tips. The floor was littered with trash and the counters were soaking wet so that when I went to wash my hands, I leaned against the counter and ended up with a huge water mark on my shirt. Not a huge deal, but why the heck isn't the attendant cleaning up the water?
Lastly, (and I am sure this will not be everyone's experience, but I feel like I need to include this in my review as a warning to others) the bouncers/security are ASSHOLES. Not that bouncers and security are typically "nice", but courteous and respectful I think should be a requirement. When we first got in, they took our tickets and didn't hand me back a stub. They told me I couldn't have it. I told them I wanted it for my collection of concert tickets (which is very extensive and I have NEVER NOT BEEN ALLOWED TO KEEP ONE) So the security guard (LIED TO ME) and told me that on my way out I could pick one up.
On my way out I approached a different security guard and asked him if I could get a ticket. He said no, that they needed to count them. I replied that the money was already spent, so why would it matter if I had one as a souvenir? I won't type out the complete conversation, but in the end.. he called me a bitch, to which I told him he was an asshole... and he then called me a FAGGOT.
Whether or not I am gay or identify as queer or even look that way to this man has nothing to do with anything. I am disgusted that someone would resort to name calling and hate speech over something so stupid. I am at fault for calling him an asshole, but he was being one. So whatever.
The point is, I will never go back to this place. I dont care who comes to play. The negatives outweigh the positives and if they employ bigots, they are definitely not getting anymore of my money. This place leaves me feeling fucked over. No wonder they call it the guvernment.
