| - My brother recently got me into collecting vinyl--a mixed blessing as I love the process of it, but it tends to take a hit to my bank account as I am a really picky person (if I want something specific, I won't compromise.)
The only local(ish) place I knew of to buy records was at Sunrise records. Good on that chain for filling the niche but it tends to cater to the standard record "must have" fare. If you're like me, and don't care for The Beatles or Led Zepplin, you're not going to find much at Sunrise.
Out of curiosity we googled to see if anything new had opened up and behold: 33 1/3! We headed on over and I think this might be our new go-to spot, because it's close by and we both left with some great gems!
Didn't catch the gentleman's name who was working there, and I assume he was the owner. But he was extremely helpful and courteous. You can tell he's passionate about what he does. Also...the man knows his damn local market. My brother and myself were the only 30-something's in there. All other customers were a bit older looking for specific releases, or much younger just starting to get into Pink Floyd and the like. It was a cool combination of nostalgia and people just starting to get into certain kinds of music (please understand none of what I just said was meant to be insulting. The owner is a smart businessman, and I loved seeing both types of customer in the same store)
The store itself is pristine, offers record cleaning services, and a good selection of players. There were a lot of essentials displayed, and some of them were beyond the typical record store fare; a man who displays "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" alongside Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours", knows how to curate a record display!
Most things were easy enough to find, but I feel like a record store that is TOO well organized is missing the point: half the fun is flipping through the stock and seeing if you get pleasantly surprised. Luckily, the owner understands that.
Price-wise, everything seemed comparable to what you'd find through discogs, minus shipping costs, so that's a nice bonus.
I had to use a lot of self restraint because there were so many good records I needed there. My resolve was most tested when I noticed a 60's motown section (Phil Spector was a psycho but lord, did he produce some great hits) I hope to become a regular here and see this local business thrive!
