I've done this hike as a somewhat regular workout since 2009. I've gone up the mountain in the snow, at night, and in the dead of summer. In that time frame I've noticed the influx of individuals attempting to make the hike. Keep in mind a few things before going.
1. This is not a day hike. . . . . Don't worry about packing the kitchen sink on your back. It should take anywhere between 1.5 to 4 hours depending on breaks and pace.
2. Bring more water. I ran into a guy today with one bottle of water to share with his lady friend and dog. That's a friggin nogo! I usually bring at least 2 liters and have some left over just in case.
3. You don't need friggin hiking boots. I don't know why people are saying this but a decent pair of trail running shoes will do you well. Just watch your footing and don't be a mouth breather.
4. Use some sunscreen. Getting a tan is nice, turning into a lobster isn't.
5. If you are somewhat athletic, run down the mountain! Of course don't be dumb and use your discretion on the appropriate parts to run. If you're running anywhere close to the top, you're wrong.
Enjoy the hike! I hope to see some of you out there!
