  • My wife and I make it an absolute priority to stop in for drinks and small plates whenever we visit Phoenix so this was going to be our typical check on the list for the evening. That is, until we were thrown for a loop. We usually opt for the Thirsty Camel since it's great for people watching and the atmosphere is upbeat rather than typical hotel lounges which will put you to sleep fast. Well, that went out the window due to them renovating the entire area including the main entrance. So now what? Our driver dropped us at the other entrance and we had to make a decision. Do we leave and go to Mastro's or start at J & G? We opted for the latter and it was a great decision. I have been to this city for the better part of 27 years and I have never been to this place mainly because I had a destination always planned out ahead of time. The visuals are stunning to start off with. It has an wide view of the entire valley, the lounge itself is well put together and the restaurant is gorgeous. We always tend to opt for the bar when we are going out for a night on the town since we gravitate towards small plates and the more immediate service aspect rather than the full presentation. Brian was taking care of us and he was on point. Very conversational, attentive and we felt 100% taken care of. A lot of bartenders will give you the small talk and it's somewhat canned and then presented in a way that makes you feel if you come back the next night, it's the same exact interaction verbatim. He was not that way at all. I opted for the Pinot Blanc and then a glass of Pinot Grigio while my wife had the Brut Rose'. Both were excellent. The appetizers were what really shined here though. The shrimp cocktail was perfect. The chill was exactly what you want and the size were quite large. The Tuna Tartare' was just ok in our opinion. It was missing something but it wasn't bad. It could be that we just enjoyed the other items more. The appetizer that blew my mind though was the Crispy Calamari. I have to preface the fact that I am not a calamari person by nature but this was off the grid in terms of a great dish. It's almost impossible to get calamari to be crispy, flaky and not have it be overly greasy or rubbery. Well, they did just that. It had a consistency that I have never experienced. It was so good that we ordered it again. That's about as common for me as having a Vegan try a Bone-In Ribeye and then order another. The music which was provided was a nice addition without being overly loud to where we couldn't hear ourselves talk. The sum it up, I think The Thirsty Camel lost two customers and J & G gained two. This has nothing to do with the former but everything to do with the latter. It's hard to go wrong either way.
