| - Rejoice hipsters and foodies! From the hip La Carnita people comes an epic ice cream saga people of the city are killing themselves for the been-there-done-that-gotta-post-that experience. Coming to a social media feed near you.
Seems like when this obviously done up hip place opened, there was a frenzy of people, driven by local foodie bloggers and social media whores, jonesing to go here, get one of their $6 monster soft serve concoctions, and post pictures of it on Instagram and whatnot (even on Yelp). Oh sweet mother of Jesus, I guess that's one way to quickly build a reputation for a newly opened shop. At least they had the forethought of providing you with plastic cone holders with a lip that catches the dripping melt as you perfect your hand-holding-a-cone-pose or whatever Instagram cliche pose you're going for.
In terms of ice cream, Sweet Jesus has a few flavours that you can get on its own, like burnt marshmallow, and they hold some decent amount of flavour; pretty alright. But you probably want your ice cream in the form of one of aforementioned monstrous concoctions that mixes in a flavour or two with other confections like cotton candy, mixed nuts or actual marshmallows in a carefully presented mess. You're probably drooling right now thinking about it.
But they do coffee too, as well as monstrous concoction versions of light drinks. I mean, there's hot chocolate, and then there is "Death by Hot Chocolate," right? Then there's the churros (usually $2 a stick), small and crispy. Makes me miss the big-ass churros I once got from a Southern Californian Costco.
Visiting Sweet Jesus is decently fun, but generally is for the novelty purpose of trying their steeply priced goods (and cluttering your social media feeds with proof of authentic visitation). The store is friggin takeout tiny, with nowhere to sit except for, officially speaking, a turquoise bench outside (which also serves as a popular backdrop for people 'gramming their cones). There is less standing room inside than in a crowded TTC streetcar. The people working here I find don't come across as enthusiastic about their jobs as the customers are about their products.
{TTC: 504 streetcar to John St and walk north.}
