  • Why oh why did I do this to myself? Despite the United Airlines PR nightmare that occurred months ago, I booked my plane ticket with them on my recent trip to Vegas. Flights to Vegas in the summer aren't exactly the cheapest so in the interest of saving some cash, I thought to myself, "How bad could flying with United be?" Okay, maybe not the worst thing in the world, but still pretty bad. First off, when booking your plane ticket, make sure to read the fine print if your flight is for Basic Economy. United introduced Basic Economy flights this past summer under the guise that it's supposed to help you save money with cheaper fares, like Spirit and Frontier Airlines. However, what they fail to make clear during booking is that you're not allowed to bring a carry-on luggage, just a purse-sized bag instead. So unless you plan to show up to Vegas wearing your entire weekend's worth of clothes onto your flight, you're going to have to cough up that extra $25 to check-in your baggage. Does that "low fare" sound so low now after you tackle on that cost? At the Las Vegas McCarran Airport, United Airlines baggage claim is in a completely different terminal. This wasn't exactly made clear either so in my confusion, I wandered around the airport trying to figure out where my luggage ended up. I had to ask around and then take get on 2 shuttles to take me to Terminal 1. Then, the information shown on the screen for where to pick up my bag was inaccurate. I hovered around at the wrong baggage carousel for almost 30 minutes trying to figure out where they had brought my whole flight's baggage and praying that it hadn't gotten delayed or left behind. It wasn't until I asked one of the workers to which they told me that they had already loaded the bags onto the ground next to the carousels. No signs or announcements were made during this whole time so how was anyone supposed to know that? It took me almost an hour in total after I had landed to finally collect my belongings and get out of the airport. This was such a giant pain in the butt that rather than check-in my luggage on my return flight home, I ended up giving one of my friends all the items I wasn't allowed to bring on as a carry-on and will be collecting them from her at another time.
