On one of my weekends spent battling the North Carolina heat I was lucky enough to find respite inside Penguin Drive In. I was told by my host it was a magnet for Charlotte "hipster." I was shocked to find not only did that miserable trend extend so far south, but he was right!
The place filled quickly and the workers moved rather slow, but they did take notice of your needs and get to you as soon as time allowed. The portions were generous and the beer selection, though primarily in bottles, was ample. While I could rant about the décor, arrant flies, or my general dislike of most of the south, I will celebrate the staff's charm, the generous meat slabs given and the ice on the outside of my beer.
