  • We dropped Curtsinger Animal Hospital not very long after I wrote that 5 star review, and here's why. We chose them as our new vet with our late Jack Russell, Mootz & again after rescuing a wonderful, heartworm positive dog from Cabarrus County shelter (who also needed to be neutered). They discussed "fast kill" vs. "slow kill" and we all agreed that the fast kill method for "Simon's" heartworm made the most sense. That required a month of Doxycyline followed by two shots, 24 hours apart we were told. What they didn't bother to tell us was that they didn't have any of the Immiticide shot required in stock and had no clue when it would arrive from Europe, there was a shortage. So, Simon finished his Doxycycline (to prevent infection from the heartworm as it died) only to be left without treatment. The vet shrugged saying there was nothing they could do. There was a shortage all over the Charlotte area. I didn't give up and through the rescue where I found our Simon I was given the name of a country vet in NC who had the drug in stock. She asked for his records and set up an appointment with him quickly. She also said she preferred to give the dog one shot, then have him come back a month later for the final two shots, 24 hrs. apart, it was easier for the dog. She also charged a fraction of what it would have cost at Curtsinger. That said, we had our vet at Curtsinger perform Simon's neutering. We think she did a good job, but when going over the bills I saw a quite pricey medication on the bill. I asked about it and was told that it was to prevent a secondary infection to the first one the vet saw. We took Simon to another vet outside of Charlotte who assured us there was no sign of a first infection, certainly no second and to not medicate him. I informed Curtsinger of this and asked for a refund on the med (believe it was an office manager who responded). She wanted proof of our having seen another vet and wanted their notes. . .they were uncomfortable about saying anything other than they didn't see any sign of Simon's needing that drug. I forwarded that response to Curtsinger and never heard from them again. Period. Would you go back under such circumstances? BTW, we have a wonderful vet in Charlotte now and our Simon is doing fine!
