| - I have never been a huge cupcake fan, but boutique cupcake shops have been popping up around Toronto everywhere and foodies are yapping a lot about cupcakes... Have they replaced macarons as the newest sweet craze?! And with deals popping up for cupcake shops, I just couldn't resist! I wouldn't call myself a cupcake connoisseur, but I have tried quite a few in Toronto (For the Love of Cake, Bobbette & Belle, Prairie Girl, The Sweet Escape, and Cupcake Diner).
For me, the qualities of a good cupcake lie in the cake, the icing, and the overall pairing of flavours. The Design Cookie definitely has won my heart because it has one of the moistest cake bases I have tasted to date. The icing is not too sweet nor heavy, and was a great afternoon snack to accompany my cup of coffee. My only complaint is that for $2.75 a pop, these were quite small in size.I ordered the following flavours:
Donna Carrot
Red Velvetino
Lemon for All Mankind
Mocha
Chocolate
Banana
I like how they play off fashion designers in the naming of their cupcakes. Very cute!
The decor of the space itself reminds me of a boudoir. It is definitely the type of place that would emasculate a man, but would be a great place to check out with the ladies! My voucher was accepted without any condescending looks or frowns, and I walked out a happy camper with my 6 cupcakes.
Verdict:
I think that The Designer Cookie has won me over with its moist cake base and quirky namesakes! I may not be able to afford a Donna Karen, but I have a feeling I'll be toting a few Donna Carrots on weekends... Now if only they could make their cupcakes bigger... but I guess that wouldn't fit in in the world of fashion where beauty is defined by size 2 waistlines. I'll leave the calorie-counting up to the models!
