| - I genuinely cannot believe I haven't reviewed Feeney's. I look back at my reviews and it's like I'm emerging from a fog. A year flew by and I didn't review anything. I could have sworn I had reviewed Feeney's. So big a part has Feeney's played in my life this past year, it's like I've never NOT gone to Feeney's.
The first time I went to Feeney's was like every time I go to Feeney's. I marvel at its bald-faced lack of pretension. This is a restaurant by and for people who remember what restaurants used to be like before chains became the norm and non-chains realized they were special and started becoming overpriced poor-value destinations (cough-Durants-cough).
If you grew up in the 70s or 80s, you will instantly recognize this place. Dingy without being dirty, all dark woods and low ceilings and Irish village frescoes. At first, you will wonder how it could possibly have stayed in business while maintaining this look, because most of the places that looked like this flatly could not keep up with changing tastes and increasing demands for quality and flair. Then you eat and you realize the truth: Feeny's keeps it simple with can't-miss old-school standards and top notch preparation and quality.
It starts with the salad bar. That's right - that relic of the 70s and 80s where you are told you are welcome to go ahead and serve yourself while you wait for your dinner to be prepared. Not well stocked enough to be a meal on its own (which is as it should be), the salad bar is the perfect appetizer. What's there are all the standards for a competent salad, is fresh, delicious and even the dressings taste home made. If it starts with the salad bar, it finishes with a flourish with the entrees. Real deal steaks and seafood, prepared simply and competently. I always get the prime rib. In fact, the reason we found Feeney's was because I was in the mood for a prime rib and we went looking for one locally. I was not disappointed. Perfectly prepared with a side of au jus and creamed horseradish, if you like prime rib, you will be intimately familiar with its presentation here.
I should mention that the service has never been anything short of top-notch. Even at their busiest, we receive constant, uninvasive attention from the host, waiters and other staff.
In short, if you're looking for a homey independent throwback that has class-A food and service at reasonable prices, give Feeney's a try, you'll love it. I know we do.
