  • My daughter has a very complex medical history due to a severe closed head injury she received as an infant. All of her care has been at Phoenix Children's Hospital. She has a traumatic brain injury which means that at nine years of age, she functions at a five year old level, has a left sided hemiparesis (think of a person who has had a stroke and they drag their leg and doesn't use their arm), behavioral issues and seizures. That's just a few of the secondary issues due to her head injury. She had a consult with an ENT due to severe snoring and a lot of sinus issues (her saggital sinus was torn in the initial head injury. Her skull has been reconstructed and has just a variety of other issues and surgeries). I was concerned and Dr. Rizzo (will do a review on him after her post op visit but so far so good) said her tonsils were ENORMOUS (beyond kissing, they were laying atop) and those and her adenoids should come out since she has an obstructive sleep apnea. Upon check in at JCL DV at 645 AM, we were promptly taken back to registration and then to pre-op. The volunteer working pre-op was very sweet! The PCT was a little short at first but she was nicer after a few minutes of chatting. Maybe it was too early in the AM or something.. who knows. Anyhow, the nurse was very, very nice. My daughter's surgery was scheduled for 8:45 but there was an issue with the first patient so we were flip flopped and she was taken back first. The nurse and I finished her records after she was taken to surgery and then I went to the waiting area. Of course, a T&A surgery is pretty quick and Dr. Rizzo came out, updated me and pretty quickly, the volunteer took me back to my sleeping daughter. I have to say, the nursing staff was tremendously helpful. I warned them that she may become upset if they touch her before the anesthesia has worn off. In a nutshell, the overnight stay was pleasant. The nursing and support staff was GREAT. The pediatrician on staff was very nice. They were concerned my daughter wasn't drinking enough the day after BUT this is typical of my child and that she will start drinking better at home than at the hospital. This isn't our first rodeo wtih surgeries and I am aware that if she isn't getting enough hydration that I will call Dr. Rizzo immediately because I won't jeopardize my child. My only complaints: The room is set up where if the patient is on an IV pole, it's difficult to get into the restroom due to an overnight guest chair. Because my daughter needs assistance, I had to have a nurse or a PCT come assist with leaning the pole in to the restroom so her IV doesnt' get pulled (OUCH!). The PCT that night did bring her a bedside commode which helped tremendously. Poor kiddo urinated on herself because it took some time getting into the restroom BUT she is pullups so it wasn't a mess. The cafeteria. Blah. I know, I know..it's a hospital but the size of this hospital is large and it should be more accommodating and have more options. Maybe I was sent to the staff cafeteria? Not sure but I didn't see people other than employees. It was in the basement and they said to go there for a PAL (Patient Advocate Liaison) discount. I thought the staff wasn't very friendly or willing to help when I asked. The food was... ok. Phoenix Children's has an AMAZING cafeteria. I ate crepes every morning. All in all, I was nervous taking her to a different hospital but I am glad that my nerves were calmed and the staff was AMAZING.
