| - The other reviewers have covered most of the bases: it's a nice hotel, and the location is good, particularly for theatre/concert-goers. I stumbled upon it years ago, and just seem to go back to it whenever I visit Toronto. We always have a good time. It's very easy to get to driving--just hop off the DonValley Parkway at Richmond. The room layouts are nice; the pools' designs are quite fun; the parking rate is not bad, and is underground, unless you have a big SUV; the included breakfast is good; the staff are friendly, although I've never had a major problem that tested their response when things go wrong.
However, I can perhaps shed some light on some of the problems others have raised.
First, this is not a "luxury" hotel. Those cost $1000s per night, not $300. It has funky, over-wrought decor in the common spaces, but it's just design fun--don't take it seriously. The rates are comparable to other tourist downtown Toronto hotels (do check for deals though)
.Second, some of the rooms are showing some wear, particularly the furniture. Surprise, it's a busy hotel. They all are wearing out. If you spend much time travelling, you know this. The Grand is clean, though.
Thirdly, if the big city is new to you, you may be surprised to find homeless people, druggies, hookers, or just plain poor folks sharing the sidewalks with you. Hey, it's Toronto--they're polite. For a big city, Toronto is quite safe, and the Garden District is fine. Don't imagine that staying in a more expensive hotel surrounded by tall buildings is safer. The pickpockets work the tourist areas, hookers talk to single men walking at night, and druggies/gamblers sweep up any stuff left unguarded anywhere. If you're not urban-savvy, maybe stick to Disney World.
To celebrate my wife's birthday, on our last visit, I had booked a larger suite for three weekdays, at a higher summer rate, so when I arrived the Desk upgraded us to an Ambassador Suite. Surprised my wife, to say the least.
