  • If you're in the Las Vegas area Red Rock Canyon is a must-do/see. Less than 20 miles away from the Las Vegas Strip. Start out in the morning before the the temp is at its highest. There is NO shade or cooling stations along the trails!! Wear comfy, light clothing and shoes with good sturdy soles. Leave your flip flops, high heels, and cute bedazzled sandals in the car (I actually saw a few misguided fashionistas regretting their attire when they couldn't walk comfortably in their shoes). Even if you're not planning to do any serious hiking the trails are not flat/paved. They are full of rocks and uneven terrain. You can park your car along the Scenic Drive then hike or bike one of the many trails. Or drive slowly along the scenic route if you're not a seasoned hiker or bicyclist. There are small parking areas at various points to get out and take pics, etc. Whatever you choose, it's not a bad idea to bring some water and snacks. It was about 80 degrees at 9:30AM when we started out. It only got hotter as the day progressed; it was almost 100 degrees by noon when we were leaving the area. Also, the earlier you are, the more likely you are to avoid crowds along the drive and trails. On our way to the visitor center (we went there after finishing the Scenic Drive rather than before) we saw a bicyclist who was taken down by heat stroke and EMS had to be called. I can't reiterate enough that the Nevada heat is NO JOKE for anyone not used to it. Nice to see a natural side of Las Vegas beyond the debauchery of the hotels & casinos for which Las Vegas is known.
